I now have the results from last Friday evening’s Sussex Under 15 League match at Horsham. As I have previously said we had lots of athletes there, especially among the boys, and we ended up in third place, some way behind Crawley and Horsham – but for once we finished ahead of Chichester. However the main purpose of this league is to give athletes a good experience of club athletics in a friendly environment and we had a number of athletes competing for the first time.
Although there were rather fewer girls than there were boys it was the girls who produced the best results. Lois Drummie got the track events off to a good start with a clear win in the 75 metres hurdles in 11.9 seconds. She later was a close second in the long jump with 4.63 metres – just one centimetre below the winner. Vicki Pellett produced another couple of wins – with 8.32 metres in the shot and 22.48 metres in the hammer with Sarah Hennessy winning the B string hammer with 17.17 metres. Before the match Sarah held the club record for the hammer with 16 and a bit metres. So while she improved on her own previous best she also saw Vicki take her club record away from her.
The track events for our girls were a bit thin, and we asked a couple of under 13s – Hannah Sands and Emmie van Lieshoult – to do some events for us. Apart from the hurdles the best track performance came from Tara Deeley with 3rd place in the 1500 metres.
As I have already mentioned we had a good number of boys and we had the rare sight of seeing 6 of our athletes in the 1500 metres – 4 of them being non-scorers. Sam Havers and Jamie Osborne did well in the sprints but found the competition tough. Owen Lawrence in his first appearance came a good second in the B string 800 metres and Thomas Dean also picked up a second place in the B string long jump with 4.41 metres – Jamie Osborne having jumped 5 centimetres further in the A string. As with the girls there were some good throwing going on – just a shame that the throwing events take place some distance from where the athletes gather and so the performances don’t get the acknowledgment they merit. Matt Hennessy was second in the A string discus (just below his best with 24.74 metres) and second again in the hammer. He was third in the shot with 8.25 metres – his first time over 8 metres – and Ewan Dallas came second in the B string with 7.30 metres. Non-scoring Sam Havers did a good 6.52 metres to beat his previous best. And Luke Webb and Jake Gadd each came third in the javelin – perhaps more importantly they both looked as if they had more to come with some further coaching.
The next match in the Under 15 league is on Friday July 19th followed by another match on Friday August 2nd. Both of these matches are at Horsham before we end the season on Friday September 6th at Brighton’s Withdean Stadium.
