Latest news – but still waiting for results from Dartford and Lewes

We have had a busy weekend with matches on both Saturday (under 13s and under 15s at Dartford) and Sunday (under 17s and under 20s at Lewes). However I haven’t seen a copy of the results as yet and so I can’t tell you too much about what happened. I’ll wait until I get the results and then tell you more.

Last Wednesday we had three of our athletes taking part in the Sussex Schools Combined Events Championships at Withdean on a rather cool and cloudy day. Lois Drummie took part as a guest in the under 15 girls events – she goes to school in Surrey rather than Sussex. She started strongly in the 75 metres hurdles with a time of 11.8 seconds and later high-jumped 1.49 metres and long-jumped 4.45 metres. By the time of the final event, the dreaded 800 metres, she was well clear of all the other athletes and her final score 2451 points put her 173 points ahead of the second placed athlete.

Abby Beswick and Ellie Killick-Bird took part in the under 17 girls event – an age-group where Sussex have many good combined eventers. Abby equalled her pb in the 80 metres hurdles with 12.3 seconds and threw a useful 23.62 metres in the javelin while Ellie led home all the athletes in the final event the 800 metres.

This coming weekend is rather quieter with the Sussex County Schools Championships at K2 on Saturday. A number of our athletes will be taking part, but this is of course a schools event rather than a club event. However it is a very important event because performances here will have a big say in who is selected for the English Schools Championships in July – and the English Schools Championships really is the top event of the year for athletes still at school. We will also have athletes at the Surrey and Cambridgeshire school events. We wish all the athletes well.

What’s happening this week ?

Tuesday June 4th – training for all athletes at Imberhorne from 7.

Thursday June 6th – training for all athletes at Imberhorne from 7.

Saturday June 8th – Sussex Schools Championships at K2 (other schools county championships are of course available throughout the country).
