“Sprint for John” night and English Schools Championships News

We had a great “Sprint for John” night last Tuesday, with a good number of former members there to support a wide range of athletes who took part in the sprints. We had nearly 70 people taking part in the various races and we ended up with a number of relays for the younger athletes. We will have to think about making this an annual event.

We are able to send a cheque for £362.40 to the Ron Pickering Memorial Fund as a result of the evening – this is a charity that provides financial support to up and coming young athletes. This amount was made up of £130 to enter the races, £94 from the raffle, £80.40 from the refreshments and £58 from donations made on the night.

We have now heard that we have 3 athletes going to the English Schools Championships in Birmingham on July 11th and 12th – Abby Beswick in the under 17 80 metres hurdles, Vicki Pellett in the under 15 girls hammer and Tom Dean in the under 15 boys 800 metres. Our congratulations to them and we wish them well.

This will be the first time since 1999 that we have had as many as 3 of our athletes going to these championships. In 1999 the championships were held in Bury St Edmunds and we had 4 athletes taking part. Under 15 girls Jodie Brockbank in the high jump and Caroline Wilson in the 100 metres, Matthew Forster in the under 15 boys 400 metres and Andrew Medcalf in the under 17 boys triple jump. Matthew was representing Surrey Schools and his time at Bury St Edmunds of 53.19 seconds is still the club record for under 15 boys. Jodie, Caroline and Andrew were representing Sussex and Andrew was 5th in the triple jump final with 13.43 metres.

Malcolm Green has dug out his old records and told me that in 1988 we had 5 athletes at the English Schools Championships which that year were held in Yeovil. We’ll try and build up a history of our English Schools athletes.
