A busy few days

A busy last few days have seen three meetings for our athletes – and school holidays meant we (and I suspect all the other teams we were competing against) had athletes missing.

Last Thursday evening saw the under 13s at Horsham and with only 3 boys turning up – Daniel O’Sullivan, Fin Gadd and Jack Sanders – we were always going to struggle. We had 8 girls – and it was good to see 6 of our under 11s there taking part in non-scoring events. Indeed we had an under 11 girls relay team competing and they set a new under 11 club record.

The following evening it was the turn of the under 15s, again at Horsham. We had come second in the 2 previous matches but with a number of girls unable to come we had to settle for third place this time.

And then on Sunday a few of our under 17s and under 20s went to Lewes for their final league match of the season. And the main feature of the match was the injuries that we seemed to be suffering from. Chloe Hollamby has been suffering with back pain for the last few weeks. She hoped it would be OK – but it wasn’t. Lois Drummie has also had back problems and she was in considerable pain after her sprint hurdles race. Then Abby Beswick crashed into a hurdle in her race and damaged her knee. And finally Daniel Rusling injured his leg while triple-jumping and decided that 1 jump was enough. (Both Lois and Abby were able to run a leg of a relay at the end of the day, though neither at full pace).

These injuries – plus holidays – are a bit of a worry for the last senior match of the summer this coming Saturday at Horsham. It is our home match and we have a lot to do to make the meeting run smoothly. Let’s hope we have enough athletes to put on a reasonable performance on the track, as well as behind the scenes.
