News from Cross-Country at Lancing last Saturday

News from Lancing for last Saturday’s cross-country league match – the third match of the winter. In the previous match we had 13 athletes but, with pre-Christmas events taking their toll, we had only 8 athletes at Lancing. However 5 of these athletes didn’t compete in the previous match and, if my arithmetic is correct, that means we could have as many as 18 athletes taking part.

Callum Stone made an excellent start in the under 13 boys race where he finished 17th out of the 48 finishers – he has another year in this age-group. Tom Dean also came up with a finish in the top half of the field when he was 13th of the 38 finishers in the under 15 boys race – with Henry Aronson coming 26th.

In the girls under 13 race we had Erin Harnett coming 23rd and Jemma Edgar 30th while Jake Lingard was our only runner in the under 11 race where he finished a good 26th. And in the senior mens race Tony Crossley (now an over 60) was 122nd with Tim Ivorson finishing in his traditional place in these races near the back.

Somewhat strangely, with the winter season only about one third of the way through, the cross-country league has already had 3 of its 4 matches – there’s only 1 to come. And this last match is on the same weekend as the Sussex Indoor Championships on February 15th. That does seem an odd way to arrange a cross-country league.

This coming weekend – Sunday December 14th – sees the second Sportshall match of the winter at Tanbridge House School in Horsham. Phil Rogers will be contacting athletes about this match.
