On your marks, get set. And go – the Summer season’s almost here

Results from the weekend

A couple of our athletes have been in action over the weekend. Callum Stone was down in Brighton and took part in the under 13 mini mile race which was run alongside the Marathon. And he came first – in a time of 5 minutes and 21 seconds. Great news and we look forward to seeing Callum on the track over the summer.

Sprinting at Gillingham was Jamie Holme, now an under 17. He had 2 runs in the 100 metres and in the first, against athletes of his own age, he won in a new pb of 12.05 seconds. Later he ran a second race, but this time with a number of senior and under 20 athletes, and he went under 12 seconds for the first time in 11.96 seconds. He also took part in the 200 metres and he won his race in another pb of 24.08 seconds. So very well done to Jamie as well.

Great news – the Summer season’s about to start

After a winter of training we are about to start the summer track and field competitive season. This coming Saturday (April 18) our under 17 and under 20 athletes join with athletes from the Haywards Heath and Lewes clubs to form a combined Team Sussex. We have a long journey for the match down to Southampton – a venue I remember as it was here some 12 years ago that Dan Medcalf set the club’s male 100 metres club record. Perhaps Abby Beswick will do something similar in the ladies’ sprints this week ?

I’m pleased to say that Julie Beswick and John Durgan have agreed to act as team managers for our under 17 and under 20 athletes. I’m very much looking forward to the match and to seeing a number of our athletes getting the season under way – let’s hope the weather is reasonable.

Training sessions

Most of the schools are now back and we will be training on both Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Imberhorne for the rest of the summer. The younger 7 o’clock athletes will now start the process of going round the different events. Over the next few weeks they will tackle a different event at each training session.

Other league matches in the near future

League matches will now take place most weeks. You should pick up a bright orange fixture list from Jane Clark when you come to training on Tuesday or Thursday. We ask you to make every effort to come to as many matches as you can – please try and arrange family events around your matches. If you fail to compete very much over the summer we will consider cancelling your membership.

Our other early matches are as follows:

Saturday April 25 for seniors, under 20s and under 17s at Hastings

Saturday May 2 for under 13 and under 15 athletes at Gillingham

Tuesday evening May 5 for under 13s (and older under 11s) at K2

Time to renew your membership

And lastly don’t forget to renew your membership. You have until Thursday April 16 to pay your fees. If you do not pay by then you will not be allowed to train.
