A poor day at Tooting Bec

Senior match at Tooting Bec

A long and awkward trip to the track at Tooting Bec – not my favourite track I have to admit. The last part of the journey saw some very heavy rain but fortunately it had finished by the time the match started – however we then had to deal with a very strong wind blowing straight down the track.

It was always going to be a difficult match against 2 of the top teams in the league – and the number of athletes who weren’t available meant we had only 4 males and 5 females taking part. Not surprisingly we finished a distant last of the 4 teams competing.

Sarah Killick-Bird produced a couple of A string first places in both hurdles races, while Cat Shin won the B string long jump. Sarah also came second in the A string triple jump with Mia Russell second in the B string with a pb of 9.44 metres. Further second places came from Abby Beswick in the long jump, while Mia and Emmie van Lieshout earned a pair of second places in the high jump.

The men found everything very tough, though it was good to see Matthew Roberts competing for the first time in nearly 30 years. Otherwise Eddie Vermeer, Phil Rogers and Tim Ivorson did all they could to pick up points in a range of events.
