News from Birmingham and from Worthing

English Schools Championships

An excellent performance from Rebekah Tyler at the English Schools Championships in Birmingham on Friday saw her coming seventh in the Intermediate Girls (under 17) shot putt with a best throw of 12.26 metres, just a few centimetres below her pb from a couple weeks ago. She beat a number of girls who had better pbs than hers.

This coming weekend Rebekah will represent Sussex in an under 17 inter-county match in Chelmsford. Cameron Wells (see more below) will also be representing Sussex in that same match – in his case in the pole vault.

Senior match on Saturday

Over this last weekend our senior team (including athletes in school years 10 and above) were competing down in Worthing in their fourth match of the season. Warm sunshine made it a very pleasant afternoon.

Cameron Wells added another 10 centimetres to his pb with a clearance of 3.80 metres – which to me looks ridiculously high. While for the ladies Ella West came away with pbs in all three of her individual events – starting with the long jump, followed by the 100 metres and ending up back in the sand in the triple jump (where she also jumped off the 9 metres board for the first time. She won both of the jumps.

And it was good to see Abby Beswick back in the 100 metres – a slight stumble at the start but otherwise a good run for her. We finished second of the 4 teams behind Herne Hill.

The senior team has its fifth and final match of the summer on August 17 at Eltham.

Matches coming up

We have a couple of matches in the next few days. On Tuesday evening July 16 at K2 our under 13s have their third Sussex Under 13 league match of the summer – with a final match a few weeks away on Sunday September 1.

Then on Saturday July 20 another match in Sussex when our under 13s and under 15s go down to Lewes. Team managers Claire Sippetts (under 13s) and Holly Brinkworth and Ed Kessell (under 15s) will be contacting athletes.
