Great results from the Sussex combined events championships

Sussex Combined Events Championships

We only had 3 of our athletes competing at this year’s Combined Events championships at the Sutton track – but all 3 came home with a medal. In fact 2 of them came first and so brought home the gold medal.

Rachel Tyler competed in the under 15 girls 5 event pentathlon and started with three pbs with 14.06 seconds in the hurdles, 4.57 metres in the long jump and 6.72 metres in the shot. A below par high jump seemed to have let in one of the other girls for first place, but a strong 800 metres saw Rachel grab first place.

Rachel’s sister Rebekah competed on both Saturday and Sunday in the under 17 girls 7 event heptathlon. A strong and cold wind was blowing into the girls in both the hurdles and the 200 metres on the first day. A decent shot putt of 11.99 metres gave her a decisive lead, even allowing for a high jump that wasn’t as high as she would have like. The second day saw a reasonable long jump – but not the 5 metres she would really like – before a pb in the javelin with just over 25 metres. Just the 800 metres left but Rebekah was so far ahead in first place that she could have jogged round.

And the third medal came from Phil Rogers in the masters 5 event pentathlon – all 5 events on the Saturday. The wind helped his long jump to 5.21 metres and a good javelin throw helped his cause. However the last of the 5 events – the 1500 metres – was always going to be a problem and meant he had to be satisfied with second place.

No training for the rest of September

Just a reminder that we are now into our end of season break from training. We will re-start in October with the starting date still to be decided.

What’s happening in the next week ?

Thursday September 12 – committee meeting. Venue to be confirmed.
